“Shoplifters” is one of Kore-eda’s most famous films. The film won the Palme d’Or at the 71st Cannes International Film Festival and the first Japanese film in 10 years at the 91st Academy Awards. It was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film Award. Director Kore-eda has been in charge of many works such as “Nobody Knows,” “Baby Broker,” and “Umimachi Diary,” and is said to be the second Yasujiro Ozu(but He don’t agree with this idea). In his works, he emphasizes the balance between memory, imagination and observation, and consistently maintains the stance of “not depicting anyone as a villain.” His representative work Shoplifters, as the title suggests, tells the story of a family who makes a living by shoplifting. As mentioned above, he doesn’t focus on the family as villains, but realistically portrays them as they could exist. Actually, they are not a family in the story, but a “formal poor family” living together under one roof, but it is no exaggeration to say that their bond seems to be stronger than that of general families. Children (who are not parents and some of whom have grown up) had a history of abuse or neglect. They actively and positively participated in this formal family. Their tentative heart connection was very strange but interesting.
