According to CNN, more than 100 prisoners have escaped from a medium security prison in Nigeria after heavy rainfall destroyed part of the facility. The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) said to the press that much of the facility was “old and weak” and “built during the colonial era.” A total of 118 inmates of the Medium Security Custodial Centres fled the prison on Wednesday night, though 10 of the escaped inmates have been captured and taken into custody. NCS also hope to assure the public that it is on top of the situation and that they should go about their businesses without fear.

I believe it would be a much bigger problem if it happened in Japan. The way the NCS are expecting the public to stay calm explains how common the situation is in Nigeria. In order to make it an uncommon event, economic growth needs to be done with the financial support from England, the country that colonized Nigeria. Even though the people who had actually been colonizing Nigeria is not alive, England should take the responsibility for the consequences of their ancestors’ reluctance towards making up to the Nigerians.
