Musicals are often connected with social issues. I will write about a movie called Hairspray, which I saw in my high school class. It is a story about a white girl, Tracy, who fights against racism and lookism in the US. What is most remarkable about this film is that it never makes us bored although it has some heavy themes. Musical is a good way to let people think about social issues because it is not too heavy. I personally don’t watch many documentary films because they make me feel sad and depressed. However, Hairspray did not make me feel that way. It is fun to watch even for kids, so it is a good way to educate them about discrimination. Tracy likes African American culture and want to know more about it. It is because she believes it would enrich her life. This movie emphasizes the benefit of multiculturalism. Some people in Japan may fear that their own culture would be endangered if they accept other ones. However, as we look at other successful examples like the US or Australia, there is a way to embrace many different culture in the same country without losing anything. Japan’s birthrate is falling anyway, so we should accept more immigrants from other countries. Then we feel much comfortable to live in this country because there is no more peer pressure or any kind of absurd ideas.
