Along the same line, I’m going to talk about an interesting thing about Japanese cultures, referring to the same videos from Hapa英会話. First of all, some people from different countries who are living in Japan might find it surprising that Japanese people are always punctual on everything. One example of this is the trains here. I’ve heard that a person was complaining about the time of departure because the train that the person was going to get onto departed only 20-30 seconds earlier. Moreover, some Japanese people even see the location of something like restaurants one or two days before so that they will not be late for it. This is called “下見” in Japanese, but people in California do not care so much about how punctual they are because they are more relaxed and laid-back than the Japanese. A speaker in one of the videos clearly said that it is okay to be late for 5 minutes or so, which is something that Japanese people will be confused when they arrive there as well.
