Lawmakers in Taiwan have approved a bill which legalizes same-sex marriage. It was the first country in Asia to pass the gay marriage legislation.  Parliament was given a two year deadline and it was required to pass the changes by 24th of May.

The lawmakers debated three different bills to legalize same-sex unions and the government’s bill, the most progressive of the three was all passed.

Supporters of same-sex marriage gather outside the parliament building as a bill for marriage equality is debated by parliamentarians in Taipei, Taiwan, 17 May 2019

Thousands of gay rights supporters gathered in the rain outside the parliament building in the capital city, Taipei to await the landmark ruling. Many of them shouts of joy and embraced with tears whenever the results was announced.

Although Taiwan has a largest gay community and the annual gay pride parade in Asia, 67 percent people have voted to reject the same-sex marriage in a controversial referendum in November last year.

In my opinion, I will definitely agree the same-sex marriage and I hope Japan will also make it legal as soon as possible. Gender doesn’t matter whenever you love someone, and I truly believe that it is the right which everyone should have. Although there may have many difficult problems coming up, I hope the world will exist where nobody will be discriminated just because they loved someone with the same-sex gender in the near future.
