Requiem for the American Dream

The first impression after I watched “Requiem for the American Dream” was quite shocking because the image of the word, “American dream” was changed in my mind. Once I thought that all people in the US have American dream and it literally motivates them to fulfill their goals. But to say with reality, it’s just an ideal thing and America has a lot of problems that should be solved.
The movie made me think of how society can work effectively. As Noam Chomsky said in his argument, “superficial democracy” has been existing in America. This is because democratizing has both advantages and disadvantages. He discussed the issue of American society, but it can be said that Japan is also in a difficult condition as well as the US, thinking about a gap-widening society. The first step to solve this problem, I think, is to improve the employment. All the people should be fair to make a “real democracy” come true. Then, to make them fair, there should be opportunities to state their opinions. In the today’s society, people without jobs tend to have social weakness. To build a real democratized-society, people should stand as they are all the same mankind. Therefore, having a job and to positively participate in a society are essential.
Although I could not come up with a specific solution for now, this film is worth watching not only for American but for Japanese people because it makes people re-consider the society.
