Miss Representation is a documentary film produced by Jennifer Siebel Newsom released in 2011. The title “Miss representation” has double meaning, which means the word “misrepresentation” and “women’s representation”. The outline is that the media gives us the stereotype that women should be beautiful, attractive and even sexual, while men are more powerful and dominant than women. At last, the film points out other female values such as capability, educational achievement, and leadership. In this film, it is said that young women hope to be like models or actresses, but they are too slim. A similar situation is happening in Japan as well because we can see models and actors everywhere, so we hope to be like them and we start to be on a diet or even cosmetic surgery though we do not have to do it. I was surprised by the high percentage of the women who have tried to commit suicide because of the dissatisfaction with their own appearance in America. Some American ads appeared in the film and they are so interesting because of the deference from Japanese ads. Their expression is much more direct than Japanese ones, for example woman is regarded as an object.
