Military Training in Taiwan

If you ever talked with Taiwanese people or have some Taiwanese friends, you might have heard about military training they underwent when they were in high school. Many people, I think, might already know that Korean guys have to enroll in the military but few would know Thaiwa has a similar system too (actually it is safe to say Taiwanese one is more comprehensive in the sense that almost all the population in their 30s or more have undergone some form of military training). Unlike in Japan, in Taiwan, all students, regardless of sex, need to take mandatory military lessons between in junior high and in high school. This means most Taiwanese people have experienced shooting guns before. According to a Taiwanese person I know, the training was very very severe because the teachers are real soldiers, who are of course very strict and scary. Taiwanese students take basic military lessons in Junior high, such as running, and martial arts and begin to simulate shooting in high school and in the second year of high school, they are taken to a real military base and shoot a real gun.

It’s called . If you have an opportunity to talk with Taiwanese people, you should bring up the topic. You may be able to hear an interesting story.
