PTT is a BBS based in Taiwan: namely, Taiwanese version of 5ch. What is unique to PTT is that it is administered by students or graduates of National Taiwan University, the top  university in Taiwan. It is the world’s largest BBS among ones used by Chinese-speaking people, boasting 1.5 million registered users and 150,000 concurrent access at its peak. Main users are young people in their 20s and 30s and lots of Taiwanese university students use it to exchange information about college life with each other. As with 5ch, the Taiwanese BBS has a variety of boards covering various topics and has developed its own unique internet culture. It is true that it is mainly used for entertainment and netizen use slang, which is extremely hard for foreigners to understand, to shout crazy and silly stuff at each other but the influences it has on the Taiwanese society cannot go unnoticed. The recent example of it is Taiwan’s remarkable success in protecting the small island from COVID-19.The key to the success is often attributed to Taiwan’s closing borders at a very early stage where other countries had not even taken the virus seriously. Why was Taiwan, ahead of other countries, able to early notice the threat of the virus and take measures to contain it? Actually, PTT played a hugely important role in it.
