Ghosn shock on Nissan

Around 1 year passed after former Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn have arrested. Since then, Nissan have been obsessed to make up “Post Ghosn” management structure. Is it going well?

In 1999, Nissan was in a financial crisis, and entered into a capital alliance with Renault. At the same time, Renault executive Ghosn came as Nissan’s COO. After he came to Nissan, cutting expenses by restructuring and closing the factory, sales were restored with a bold renewal of the lineup. Some called the success “Ghosn Magic” and he was hailed over Japan.

However, in 2018, he was arrested for false description of his executive compensation, then public evaluation turned cold. Nissan’s image was deadly damaged, and forced the management to reorganize. However, Saikawa, who succeeded Ghosn, also retired from the board of directors this September, and the management was replaced again. Nissan’s management has yet to stabilize, while its brand image damaged.

Nissan emphasizes how their technologies advanced and how popular, such as “No.1 sales in segment” or “Yacchae Nissan [Do it Nissan]” in its advertisement. However, according to the latest financial statement, the sales of automobiles is in the red again, and it managed to make profits with the financial business. Nissan will have no hope in the future unless it quickly stabilizes its management and restores its brand image.
