I found this news about the live-action adaptation movie of “The Little Mermaid” which is scheduled to be start created in 2020. Disney announced the main cast, who is going to act as Ariel and a black actress and R&B singer, Halle Bailey was chosen to play Ariel.

The news was praised by celebrities including Mariah Carey as well as many fans. How ever, it also received some protests from people who were upset by this Ariel`s casting. They claimed that Ariel has fair skin and red hair and the appearance of the actress should be like that. Some even insisted that their childhood were destroyed by this casting. They even created a hashtag, #NotMyAriel. #NotMyAriel was trending on the twitter but it was because many people were claiming how it is stupid to be offended by black Ariel. People who supported black Ariel believed that Ariel is a mermaid, a mythical character so she can have any skin color.

To be honest, I was one of those who were shocked by black Ariel. However, until Disney released “The Princess ans the Frog“, they never created a single black princess for about 70 years and I think it is a great timing to change the perspectives about race.

To be honest, it may be hard for us to imagine the black woman plays Ariel which we tend to think she has white skin and red hair, however, it will be a good chance to modify our stereotypes against those “white based stories”.
