Today the obesity rate of young people whose age is under 20 has increased. There are three important causes for obesity.

First, young people tend to lack exercise. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communication, the rate that people whose age is between 15 and 19 play sports in a year has been decreasing by 15% since 1986. Children today play video games instead of playing tag and kick the cans after school. Besides, after entering university, they have little opportunity to do exercise because there is no place to excise and a majority of students do not join the sports clubs.

Second, their bad life habit causes obesity. According to the Japanese Society of Child Health, children’s average sleeping time has been decreasing and that time in 2010 is 30 minutes shorter than in 1987. For example, children tend to stay up late at night to prepare for the test or to watch late night TV programs.

Finally, dietary changes lead to obesity. Children tend to eat high calorie meal, such as fast food and pizza, owing to westernization of food custom and have dinner at late time. According to Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, the rate of elementary and junior high school students who have dinner after 7 p.m. is 46% and this number is 10% higher than that of 12 years ago.

In conclusion, lack of exercise, bad life habit and dietary changes are big causes of young people’s obesity. To prevent obesity, they should improve their life habit and take a strong attitude to their own health in my opinion.
