Real Wealth

In the worldwide award-winning movie “Slumdog Millionaire”, the difficult life of a young boy named Jamal Malik who grew up in the slums of India presumably as one of 170 million Dalits is depicted. From my point of view, the main messages of this film are concealed behind his harsh life, that is, “What is real valuable wealth in our lives?”.

In contrast to the game show promoting values on a large money or high status, Jamal does not think those things generally valued are the real wealth, but what we really need to get a happy or successful life is our faith. First, in the game show, he never stopped answering questions though there was a risk to lose all the money he had gotten before then. Furthermore, he didn’t seem to be happy or relieved at all after answering the correct answers, and rather his face was showing a thoughtful expression all through the show. From these things we can infer that he didn’t put importance on big money for his life, even though it could have completely changed his difficult life with the lowest class of society. Contrarily, there was one thing he never gave up for his entire life; the bond between his precious girl, Latika. No matter how hard or difficult his life was, he knew what he had to follow, which was his faith. Consequently, his poverty and the hard-knock life made him rich in the end with his strong belief.

In conclusion, Jamal never forgot what the real wealth in his life was, because he knew “the answers” for a wonderful and meaningful life. He showed us that a life is not decided by a destiny, but rather, deciding a destiny is a life. I hope we all can live our lives with our own faith, considering what is important in our lives like Jamal did. And at the same time, I wish we can abolish hierarchical system such as caste system, and make impartial world someday.
