illigal felling in Aceh

The 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake, known as the Great Sumatra-Andaman earthquake, occurred on Sunday, 26 December 2004. The earthquake resulted in great Tsunami. This killed 220,000 people and injured 130,000 and the total financial damage was about 977,000,000 dollars.

In addition, the earthquake of Indonesia has caused large deforestation in Aceh province, in Indonesia because this deforestation results from the reconstruction demand of Sumatra. The much bigger demand accelerated illegal felling explosively.

Environmental organization says that forest has decreased 31,800 hectare which is equal to about 6,800 times than area of Tokyo dome every year. Local people fear that they experience a rash of flood and landslip. Moreover, it has been reported so far that the wells ran dry and temperature rises abnormally.

People, who were dismissed from their jobs after the 2004 earthquake, can’t choose their work and have to fell illegally. Local police and military don’t always react to illegal logger.

By the way, Orangutans inhabit in the area around Aceh. They leads to the extinction of orangutans also.
