Taiwan’s presidential election took place last Sunday. More than 70% of the citizens voted, which shows that Taiwanese people actively participated in politics and have a strong will to move the country by themselves. The biggest reason which can explain the high voter turnout is that Taiwan is facing a great threat from China and is forced to protect itself to save the lives of its citizens. This abnormal situation stimulates Taiwanese people to vote. In a sense, Taiwan is one of the most democratic countries to the point that people try to make decisions by themselves.
The election was broadcast not only in the Asian country but also around the world. Now China is considered as a great power after the U.S. and nobody can ignore China’s actions anymore. In the election, there were three candidates who have different opinions and manifestations about the economy, politics and relations with China. In the end, Lai Ching-te, who had an anti-China policy, won. In response to his victory, China has warned saying that the risks have increased.
It is difficult to predict Taiwan’s future result, and what we can do is limited. However, it is important not to be prejudiced and to focus on this conflict.
