Empty houses in Japan

Japan is the country with the most vacant houses in the world; as of 2020 data, the percentage of vacant houses is 13.55%. Some say that if no action is taken at this rate, Japan’s vacant house rate will exceed 30% in the near future. What are the reasons for this? Of course, the declining birthrate, aging population, and depopulation of rural areas are among the causes. One major reason, however, is the lack of utilization of used houses. Recently, there has been an increase in the number of cafes and inns that have renovated old private homes. However, there is still a lack of utilization of second-hand houses. Therefore, I believe that the city and prefecture should work together to promote projects to utilize vacant houses. Measures such as supporting those who renovate and DIY vacant houses and providing subsidies to young people who move to rural areas are already in place, but more advanced policies will be needed in the future.
