I watched the movie “ Hacksaw Ridge”

Desmond Doss, born and raised in a lush town in Virginia, USA, was an active boy who ran around the fields with his brother Harold. One day, a fight with his brother almost kills him.Blame yourself and engrave the teachings of “Don’t kill me.”

As an adult Desmond fell in love with the nurse Dorothy Stte and spent a thrilling time. However, World War II intensifies and Desmond’s younger brother and his friends go to war one after another. While cherishing his teaching, Desmond volunteered for the army, saying, “If you are a hygienist, you can serve your country.” Desmond, who was trained hard by his superior sergeant at the base, was confident in his physical strength and had no difficulty climbing obstacles at full speed. But when rifle training begins, Desmond resolutely refuses to touch the gun.Desmond had no other reason to touch the gun than Moses’ Ten Commandments.

Desmond insists that there is no problem with military uniform or military service and that he can only kill people. The captain says, “War is killing people,” and if he cannot obey orders, he is sentenced to leave the army. From that day on, the boss and the soldiers began to harass him, but Desmond’s determination remained unchanged, and the people around him recognized his position and encouraged him to leave the army, but Desmond showed his willingness to serve in the army.

However, on the day of her wedding to Dorothy, which she promised before going to war, Desmond was told that she would not be allowed to take a leave of absence unless she had completed rifle training, and that she would be put in court-martial as a denial of order.Desmond proudly declares at a court-martial, “I’ll kill everyone, but I want to help.”Desmond’s claim is accepted, although he is in trouble.

Time passed and Okinawa was in May 1945.Desmond of the 77th Infantry Division arrived at Haxaw Ridge. It was a fierce battlefield in which the advance troops climbed six times and were defeated six times.Climbing the 150-meter cliff, there was a strange world where I had never seen a sergeant in a hundred battles. As soon as they advanced, the soldiers fell down in an instant due to fierce attacks from all sides by the Japanese army.Desmond helps seriously injured soldiers as health soldiers. However, even if he occupies Haxaw Ridge once, he is forced to retreat due to severe war conditions.Meanwhile, when Desmond sees his injured companions left behind, he decides to stay alone in the battlefield.

When the movie was over, my heart was complicated because its story was about WW2 and especially US army against Japanese army. I couldn’t watch the movie with smile. And I think Japanese people won’t make such a movie filmed by American point of view.  So it was fresh for me for I could feel how the war was like for American people.
