The video was produced by Japanese Youtuber who makes videos so as to introduce Japanese culture, what Japanese think and the gap between Japanese and foreigners to foreigners. In this video, he asks ordinary people what they think about criticism that the performance by Katy Perry wearing Kimono which adopt Japanese culture is appropriation of Japanese culture and Katy Perry lacks consideration for Japanese people.

All of the interviewees regard the performance by Katy Perry as proud because it means that Japanese culture is recognized by foreign artists. Katy Perry’s performances are often criticized for appropriation of culture because I think she disregards the backgrounds and meanings of culture she imitates. Those who superficially know culture different from their own culture and try to use it could be regarded as appropriator, especially in the case where they exaggerate other culture without considering what people who originally use the culture think. Therefore, when borrowing other culture, it is required to have a respectful attitude toward people who always get in touch with the culture and to express their intention to understand the culture.
