Strict parenting styles, particularly those epitomized by the “Tiger Mother” approach, demand rigorous discipline and high expectations for children’s success. While some may view this method as essential for achieving excellent grades and a successful future for their children, concerns about its negative repercussions are significant.Firstly, strict parenting can suppress children’s autonomy and creativity. Raised under the shadow of high expectations and stringent rules, children may lack the ability to make decisions for themselves and explore their own paths. This can hinder the long-term development of independent thinking and problem-solving skills. Moreover, strict parenting can negatively impact children’s emotional health. The constant pressure and expectations from parents can induce high levels of stress and anxiety, leading to psychological issues such as low self-esteem. When children link their self-worth solely to academic achievements or accomplishments, they may find it difficult to recover from failures. The relationship between parents and children can also suffer. Strict parenting often gives children the impression that their parents value grades or achievements over unconditional love. This can weaken the trust and intimacy between parents and children, potentially leading to estrangement over time.In my case, my parents did not adopt a strict parenting style, and I chose a non-traditional path by dropping out of high school. This experience highlighted the importance of autonomy and the right to make one’s own decisions, providing valuable lessons in finding one’s own way.In conclusion, while strict parenting may yield short-term benefits such as improved academic performance, it can have long-term negative effects on children’s emotional health, creativity, and their relationship with parents. It is crucial to remember that love, support, and understanding are more important for a child’s success than strict discipline.
