Good morning everyone! I am Natsuko. This weeks movie review is going to be about “Don Jon”. I did not know till I started to watch this (I actually thought it was a rom-com), but this movie is so sexual, just to let you know. This is a comedy movie, it is designated as R-15 but I felt it is more sexual.

Plot

Don Jon cares about only a few things; his body, his pad, his ride, his family, his church, his boys, his girls, his porn”. Although he is active in his own sex life, he is more satisfied watching pornography and lose himself. He found a perfect looking, very cute girl and he thought he fell in love but still… he cannot stop watching it. His addiction to pornography had a negative impact on his relationship but… Well, let’s not spoil everything.

Interesting Points

For the first half or more of the movie, it is about a normal “jerk”, who objectify women, only cares about his body and sexual desire, and there are so many scenes that women are just seen as a sexual object by guys. Don Jon and his friends go to a club and go like “that red dress?… maybe a 8 or 7.” They grade how hot those girls are, and call them “Ponytail”, “red dress”, “yellow”, and so on.  They hit on girls who are good enough as one night stand, and then take her home and just have sex, and that is it. Maybe those things happen normally, and even some girls are willing to do that, but I was a bit shocked. Barbara, who is played by Scarlett Johansson, is described as a really sexy blond girl with “perfect” body (body which is considered as perfect, very feminine, curvy but not chubby). Scarlett Johansson often plays these type of roles. And Barbara seems to have a little problem too. She cannot stand when things do not go as she wanted, and want her boyfriend to be exactly what she want her boyfriend to be.

I think it is interesting that it is not like a taboo anymore to talk about addiction related to sexual matters. Although Japan is more conservative about that I guess. Also, I think the way he goes to a church, pray and confess his sins to father is controversial. Maybe this is the way some modern christian do, or maybe this is only for him, I am not sure, but this is not the way I think of when people say they go to a church every week.

I thought about changing the movie when it got so sexual, though I kept watching till the end. This is definitely not a movie that you should watch with your family. Some of you may think it is gross, some of you may think funny and fun. I did not have a bad feeling after watching it till the end, but it was way more sexual than the movie I usually watch. It is a comedy movie and exaggerating the way the women “should be”, but it is interesting if you think about gender issues when you watch this movie.

If you want to watch this movie, I recommend you not to watch in the morning. And, not with your family or people which are not that close to you.
