M3GAN is an American science fiction horror film released in 2022. Psycho-thriller about the tragedy caused by an AI doll that protects children. Gemma, a researcher at a toy company, develops an AI doll called M3GAN, which looks like a human. Megan was programmed to be the best friend for children and the greatest collaborator for their parents. When Gemma takes in her niece Kadie, whose parents died in a car accident, she instructs Megan to protect Kadie from all events. However, Megan’s excessive affection leads to unexpected consequences. Personally, I felt that this film is like a doll-based horror film with science fiction elements added, but the root of the scare is a little different from existing ones. It is a fear that comes from the reality that ‘in the near future, something really close to Megan might be realised’. This feeling may not have existed before the advent of AI. Megan is not powered by curses or mysticism, nor is she a product of some far-future, fantasy-like technology: she has an AI brain, the ability to speak in a way that could be managed with chatGPT and smart speaker technology, and a changing facial expression reminiscent of Professor Hiroshi Ishiguro’s androids. The branches of technology are all reminiscent of existing technologies. Then there is Gemma, who focuses on her work by letting her deal with her niece, and Kadie, who becomes dependent on Megan. These are similar to parents who show their children YouTube on their smartphones to keep them quiet, and to children who become addicted to the internet, which also gives the film a sense of reality. There are almost no grotesque scenes and the film is easy to watch even if you are not a fan of such images, making it easy to recommend.
