“ALICE” is a dark fantasy movie directed by Jan Švankmajer, who is a surrealism artist. This movie is inspired by the book “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” (1865) written by Lewis Carroll. As you know, this is a story about a girl who follows a white rabbit into a bizarre fantasy land. However, this movie changed my image of the character Alice completely. Because I have watched only Disney movie “Alice in Wonderland” (1951), the image of Alice is cute, and the world of Wonderland is fascinating. On the other hand, in this movie “ALICE”, the world is weird and grotesque. The mood makes me feel like depressed. This mystery ambience must be affected by the director’s sense of value of surrealism. By not using CG to represent the characters and the world, he adopts the stop motion animation which is based on the elements of real world. That enable this movie to harmonize reality with unreality. Then, this harmony of two contrasting things probably gives this movie weird mood.

After watching this movie, I read the original work “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”. I thought this movie was more faithful to the original than Disney movie. The world view is similar to the illustration of the book. I suggest you to watch this movie and experience the original world of “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”.
